How To Turn off Windows 10  Update 

 Before turning off windows updates , we should know about some important things :

1. What is Windows update?

Windows Update is a service provided by Microsoft for users of Microsoft Windows which installs software updates for the operating system and its installed components. Microsoft Update, an expanded version of the service, provides updates for other Microsoft software as well, such as Microsoft Office. Windows Update clients normally download updates over an Internet connection, although Microsoft makes provision for installing updates on computers without an Internet connection and a range of alternative methods and programs also exist to install updates.

The service provides several kinds of updates. Security updates or critical updates protect against vulnerabilities to malware and security exploits. Other updates correct errors unrelated to security, or enhance functionality. Service packs and feature updates provide larger sets of updates that introduce new features to Windows and remove discontinued capabilities. Definition updates for Windows Defender are provided through Windows Update as well.

Microsoft routinely releases security updates on the second Tuesday of each month (Patch Tuesday), but can provide them whenever a new update is urgently required to prevent a newly discovered or prevalent exploit targeting Windows users. System administrators can configure Windows Update to install critical updates automatically so long as the computer has an Internet connection, without the user needing to install them manually, or even be aware that an update is required.

Windows Vista and later provide a Control Panel to configure update settings and check for updates; this was moved to the Settings app in Windows 10. For previous versions of Microsoft Windows, users can download updates from the Windows Update website, using Internet Explorer.

However Bottom line is : Many do not want to install windows updates because it consumes lot of bandwidth and data . Which frustrated my  users, because they dont want their Internet speed to be slow and some of updates install are very time consuming as well. 

2. Methods to Turn off Windows Update :

Now there are three methods to turn off / Disable / Stop Windows 7 / 8 / 10 updates easily.
However all methods provide different level of prevention from the windows updates.

Methods 1: 

This method is uses the feature of windows 10 , which comes inbuilt.

1. Open the start menu and select Settings. or Press Windows button + I

2. Click the Network and Internet link.

3. Select Wi-Fi from the sidebar.

 

4. Click the Manage known network link under your existing connection
.

5. Choose the network you’re currently using from the list of available ones.

6. Click Properties.

7. Find the Metered connection section and toggle the switch to On.

 

Whenever you use this method, windows automatically  understand you have limited bandwidth of data , so windows stop downloading the updates , whenever you use this connection for Internet access .

Method 2:

This method is temporary but , it is useful when  want to delay updates for week, actually using this you postpone update downloading and installing for a week. Hence it makes sense that you want to update your windows , but not now, later after some days , so you can work on laptop or PC , without giving all your bandwidth of data to big and hungry Updates.

 Click Start type CMD and right click on it open as Administrator.

1. Right-click the Start Menu and select Command Prompt (Admin).
2. Enter net stop wuauserv
3. Enter net stop bits
4. Enter net stop dosvc
5. Close the Command Prompt window.

Each command may take a few seconds to complete. If you want to reverse the process and resume downloads, follow these steps:

1. Right-click the Start Menu and select Command Prompt (Admin).
2. Enter net start wuauserv
3. Enter net start bits
4. Enter net start dosvc
5. Close the Command Prompt window.

However there is easier way to do this and but this feature is provided in lastest aniversary update of windows 10.

1. Open the start menu and select Settings. or Press Windows button + I

 

2. Click on update and security

 3. Choose Advance option (in Right side options)

4. Turn on Pause updates option

Method 3.

Completely Disable Windows Updates or Permanently turn off windows update

Step 1.  open Run using command (windows button + R) and type services.msc

Step 2. Services windows appears , now scroll down to choose option windows update

 

Step 3: Choose Startup type :  Disabled

  Step 4:  Choose Recovery tab and  choose first failure : Take No Action and finally apply setting.

Makes sure to restart PC or Laptop after doing method 3 steps. And in case you want to turn on windows update simply on step 3 choose Startup type : Automatic.
